Here are some tips to stay in the black:

• Make a list with a real budget so you don't buy the first thing you see, even if it's last-minute;
• Stick to that list, no matter what;
• Get an extra small gift for that unexpected gift you may receive; 
• Shop online for special sales and take advantage of free shipping deals. If you aren't seeing someone until after Christmas, buy their gift on Boxing Day;
• Use the dollar store for wrapping, decorating and other disposable throw-away items;
• Shop local and help your local merchants stay in business;
• Better yet, if you are handy, make gifts like baskets; and other fun items and use the dollar store for your materials,
• Use cash - can you say Interac®?;
• If you must use a credit card, use it for smaller purchases and pay it back as soon as you can;
• Don't tip everyone. Limit your tipping to those people in your life that it would be awkward to not tip like your cleaning lady, your babysitter, your dog walker etc.;
• Enjoy the spirit of the season by giving back to others – volunteer or donate money and/or your time.
